The manipulation of education, news, and the German youth played roles in shaping Nazi ideology and perpetuating Hitler's control over German society. The articles, “Indoctrinating Youth” by the US Holocaust memorial museum, “Of the Wide-Eyed in Uncertain Times: The Education of Girls during the Third Reich” by Ingmar D. Clausing, and “The Press in the Third Reich” by the US Holocaust memorial museum discuss how Hitler and his Nazis used many factors such as the education of children as well as the media to control and mislead the citizens of Germany. Hitler and his Nazis affected the German education and news by using them to spread Nazi beliefs and to glorify Hitler in Germany. Nazi youth groups, such as the Hitler youth group, were institutions run by the Nazis to win over millions of German adolescents to Nazism (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). As mentioned in the article, “Indoctrinating Youth”, “In January 1933, the Hitler Youth had approximately 100,000 members, but by the end of the year this figure had increased to more than 2 million. By 1937 membership in the Hitler Youth increased to 5.4 million before it became mandatory in 1939. The German authorities then prohibited or dissolved competing youth organizations” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). With its popularity before it was even enforced unto Germany, the Hitler Youth group sought to unite young boys into the Nazi national community as well as preparing them to serve as soldiers for the armed forces (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). The Hitler Youth organization mainly prioritized their focus onto young German boys, while for girls there were youth organizations for them as well, such as the League of German girls (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). Similarly to the Hitler Youth group, the League of German Girls placed a strong emphasis on group sports like rhythmic gymnastics because, according to German health officials, these activities are less physically exhausting on women and will better prepare them for motherhood (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). The overall idea of the youth groups was to train children to become faithful to the Nazi Party and for them to become future leaders of the Nazi state (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).
