The special education department at Chisago Lakes High School has nine special education teachers who serve students in many different disability areas. The teacher who has the most experience with autism has more of the population of the students with developmental cognitive students and autism. The ten students on her caseload are in the mainstream setting for one to two blocks of the four block day. They struggle with reading, writing, math and functional skills. The teachers instruct three blocks of the day, math, language arts and transition skills. Each block is eighty minutes with one short break for movement. This would mean that students are level two or three setting.

She began talking about the modifications needed in the classroom to make students successful in the general education setting. Rebekah talked about team teaching for the core classes and the success both teachers see, general education and special education. The fact that there are two teachers working together to meet the needs of all students in the classroom perked my ears. As the conversation got deeper, it seemed like this was the answer to success in the general education classes. She went on to tell me that the teacher she worked with was the specialist on the subject they were teaching but she was the subject expert on modify the curriculum. The modifications were not only used for special education students but also benefited the gifted and talented students. The general education teacher started to understand what it really meant to differentiate the curriculum.
