KVT currently has a nonprofit board in place, made up of my wife, the local church members, the building owner, and two other volunteers from the store. They made the decision to hire management from both outside the company and inside the existing company. Hoping that by bringing the two together will allow for open communication between the staff and management, as well as bringing new ideas to the table. “Changes are going to happen for older businesses to run more smoothly. If not, that business may not succeed. Currently, we must present ourselves with positive attitudes for our workplace to operate and grow. This will allow for KVT to pay minimum wages to employees and to develop a chain of management. The foundation of management is needed for KVT to continue its growth in the community. While the store has always had a management staff, these people were not being paid or putting much structure to the staff. The store was run on an ethical way of leadership and this is something that will change with the transition of the store.
“Servant leadership involves selflessly working with followers to achieve shared goals that improve collective, rather than individual, welfare.” (Weis, 2.8,2015) Currently, KVT is relying on a volunteer staff. This leaves the management vulnerable and dependent on who is available and what is expected. Organization and control allow a leader to be more efficient and for the entire company to flow in a seamless manner. The organization trait allows the person to juggle all that is asked of him/her, while keeping a level head. A person who is organized, has a good idea of the needed information and is quickly, fixing problems, pushing ideas forward, and keeping the employee’s schedules all under control.
Control can sound negative when it comes to being a leader. However, it takes a person who can think fast on their feet, and feel confident enough in their choice to motivate the followers. Managers with military backgrounds are trained to handle any situation, making them a natural at finding solutions quickly. It is important for managers to balance the control given, with letting the employees have a little freedom of their own. Killbuck Valley Thrift needs to keep this in mind moving forward, the staff needs to play a part in developing the store. It will be in their best interest to involve them, to have a calm and welcoming environment, instead of a stressed and unmotivated
