By taking on leadership roles such as being president of environmental club and public relations of class council, I am a mentor to others all while sharing the same interests and providing opportunities for them to build their own character. Prior to this school year, I was fortunate enough to attend a weeklong event called Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, where I lived there for a week surrounded by young leaders from all over south jersey. In this experience, I learned that being a leader means being understanding of others and their situations. With this experience I was able to bring back what I learned to my own communities like environmental club. Not only do I have to be organize and communicative, but I also have to be a role model to members of a club by showing my own good character.

Chapter one of the readings provides the background knowledge of leadership. Consequently, an understanding of leadership leads to defining branches of leadership. As chapter two provides insights of the leader, chapter three provides insights of the follower and chapter four which completes the branches of leadership provides knowledge as it relates to the goal. Finally, chapter five will bring together the leader, follower and the goal to link them in the leadership process while chapter seven outlines how the role of the follower is evolving globally within the leadership process.
This book was written to people become a more effective leader. I learned a lot more about leadership and what traits an effective leader should have. After reading this book I look at leadership a lot differently. My thoughts before of a leader were traits of being positive, communicating with others, leading by example, going beyond what is expected of them, being responsibly, and having integrity.
Leaders as stewards allows people to see their vision by each individual sharing their ideas and story to help develop the organization. Leader’s as teacher is about helping them develop systemic understanding of the vision as they key to success. What a Leader Is Leadership is intricate and multifaceted, evidenced by the diversity of definitions assigned to it. Brady and Woodward suggest looking beyond the definitions to better understand the complexity of leadership. They call us to look beyond a definition of leadership and consider the why and how of leadership. First, they ask the reader to consider not only why people pursue leadership, but also why people continue in leadership. While the answer to question one may reveal the selfish nature of potential leaders, the second reveals the altruism of great leaders; the desire to serve and empower others to face challenges and correct problems (Brady, & Woodward, p. 19).

Most importantly, since the contents of this course are largely different from what I have learned in my major courses. I regard this as a rare opportunity for me to take on some new challenges, and I would like to take a chance to develop my leadership skills. Before attending this course, “leadership” is a word quite far away from me, and I only have some basic understandings of it. And I found out that most of my thoughts I had about leadership are very different from what it really is.
