Teachers play a vital role in the education of our nation’s children. A role not to be taken lightly, or viewed as a vocation where one learns how to teach in college and applies that knowledge to learners for the remainder of their teaching career. On the contrary, a teacher is a lifelong learner who is committed to a future of continued training, development and self-discovery in an effort to meet the diverse needs of students in an ever-changing world. This paper will summarize key themes present in the InTask Standards as they describe teacher responsibilities. Students come from diverse backgrounds with experiences unique to them. Reviewing content prior to a lessons ensures the concrete understanding needed to support instruction delivery and student understanding. Successful instruction must reach every learner and depend on multiple factors and considerations. Knowing and understanding students and their communities is vital when planning meaningful instruction and teaching strategies which help students make connections that lead to deeper learning (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010). A teacher’s knowledge of assessment methods is vital to the learning growth of each student. What the student knows or needs to know is based on if and how their learning is measured. Just as multiple learning strategies help students to make connections to learning, multiple methods of assessment help the teacher connect to what and how the student is learning. I’ve learned how vital this is in the planning process of instruction and in deciding appropriate teaching strategies.
