Introduction When speaking about education assessment is almost always a key topic of discussion. According to The Glossary of Education Reform, assessment is defined as the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students. Assessment is vital because when done properly it helps teachers determine student’s level of understanding and performance and allows them to provide appropriate differentiation for those who require modifications. This article synthesis will focus on forms of alternative assessment. Alternate assessments are a way to assess students learning and understandings, such as games, observations, portfolios, teacher and parent ratings. These assessments are given to eligible students who are unable to perform efficiently on regular assessments because of disability.

These are known as “authentic” assessments. According to Downs & Strand “authentic” assessments can be used as alternative to traditional assessment. This form of assessment put emphasis on using familiar adults to determine a particular child’s skills while immersed in functional behaviors with familiar stimuli in natural settings. “Authentic” assessment helps students view themselves as active participants, who are working on a task of value, rather than passive recipients of useless facts. It helps teachers by encouraging them to reflect on the relevance of what they teach and how they teach
