Todd Beamer from flight 93 and Let’s Roll, by Lisa Beamer, put the safety of those on the ground before the safety of his own life: “It’s what we have to do”(Beamer 212). Todd was scared for the his life and the other passenger’s lives. Todd and the other passengers overthrew the plane and crashed it in an empty field, saving countless lives and the White House. This sacrifice is a great example of bravery, as the way the passengers rebelled against the terrorists is very courageous and brave. The actions of the passengers resulted in saving many people on the ground, along with saving the White House.
In present time, however, rules have changed. Heroes don’t have to be knights protecting their kingdom anymore. They can be activists, entertainers, authors, entrepreneurs, etc. It doesn’t matter their career, if they were to incorporate helping others it can show a great deal of heroism. Beowulf and Maya Angelou are both examples of heroes.
Lawson Bennett Mrs. Tollett English 10 Honors 6 March 2023 The Hero Chris Kyle Chris Kyle, the American Sniper, was the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history and is an extraordinary hero. Chris Kyle. American hero or cold blooded killer? I first heard about Chris Kyle through my dad. My dad found it important to tell me about Chris Kyle because he didn't let anyone or anything limit him. Despite the belief of many that Chris Kyle was a cold-blooded killer, he should be revered as a true American hero because he spent 10 years of his life serving in Iraq as a Navy SEAL, killing over 160 Iraqis that were trying to harm Americans, and he also dedicated his free time to retired vets.
What makes Chris McCandless a hero was his desire to be his true self. In order for Chris to find his true self, he embarked on a long journey to the wilderness of Alaska. Before he went off on the trip, he gave away his money to less fortunate to rid himself from the “impurities” of life. He said that “he would shortly donate all the money in his college fund to OXFAM America, a charity dedicated to fighting hunger” (Pg 20 Ch 2). His donation consisted of 24,000 dollars, which would help a various amount of people to live another day.
One major characteristic of a tragic hero is the “Admirable Heroic Quality”. Chris Kyle was clearly regarded a modern day
In the novel Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis Zamperini survives for over two years, stranded at sea and then moving between various POW camps. He shows the strength to not give away American secrets. However, I would not say that these actions made him a hero. Slaughterhouse-Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, has a more accurate depiction of war. In Slaughterhouse-Five, war is shown to damage soldiers’ mental states.
The Devil of Ramadi Known to many to be the most lethal sniper in United States history Chief Petty Officer, Chris Kyle has made a name for himself. He donated lots of money to people and places and charities that needed it the most . This would be one reason why someone would think he is heroic. Anyone can be a hero. For instance, Robert Bentz was being selfless when he put himself between a driver of a stolen car and Bentz’ son. “In the split second of seeing the car coming straight at [his son] Roudy, Bentz cranked his steering wheel as hard as possible. That put him between the oncoming car and his son.” Though Bentz is a normal person, he was still able to save his son from injury.
Heroes put others before themselves and will do anything to ensure that thing’s safety. Many people have either risked their lives or have loss their lives due to trying to save others. An example of this would be the man in the red bandana or Welles Crowther. Crowther was working in the twin towers as planes were crashing into them. Crowther could have ran away from the other people when the planes hit, but he chose not to spare himself, but to save others and sacrifice his own life.
“Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem.” - President Ronald Reagan, 1983. I think this quote, by Ronald Reagan, not only speaks for marines but for all veterans who have served their people and made sacrifices to protect the rights of those people. I am proud and take great pride to be living in a country protected by such courageous men and women who have served to make a positive difference in our country. When someone risks their own life for the betterment of others, it is a very noble act that requires immense bravery and courage.

I was awoken by a violent rumbling. My work desk shook like a building during an earthquake and woke me up in the process. Not fully aware of what had caused the disturbance, my eyes darted around the dark room, eventually landing on the vibrating phone next to a large pile of rented textbooks and overdue novels. Picking up the phone, a familiar pair of brightly colored circles accompanied by dainty arrows met my gaze. I grunt, “A phone call.”
Although the term deviance usually carried a negative characteristic in first impression trough out history, afterward the term positive deviance was also introduced and analyzed.
