Statement on Research

Research as a service to society has been always my main motivator; I realize that this may be considered naive, nevertheless it is the base of my commitment to the Land Grant University System. Although the impact of the Land Grant University System is very difficult to accurately measure with simple statistics, there is no doubt in mind (in agreement with many authors) that the research conducted in Universities like South Dakota State University (SDSU) is likely one of the main factors in the economic and technological development of the USA in the 20th century, and it is an example of the impact that universities could and should have to improve people’s lives around the World. In addition to number of publications, presentations and grants (all these are reported later) I like to look at the number of collaborators, germplasm I have developed and transferred to breeding programs and to how my students have grown professionally. I am privileged to count 31 collaborators (13 in SDSU and 18 external), several of them international (France, Brazil, Iran, Spain); I consider team work as the only way to increase the impact of our research efforts and our competitiveness to secure funding in the future. I am also very proud of the effort I have made to help the breeding programs (in SDSU and the region) to address pressing issues such as the development of disease resistant varieties. In regard with publications, I use LOOP (loop.fronteirsin.org) to try to gather some information on the interest for my research. I was greatly surprised to read that cross-referring LOOP and SCOPUS (SCOPUS keeps track of citations of publications with DOI numbers) I have reached 992 citations even though LOOP doesn’t have all my
