Leadership is a value-loaded term .To many people, leadership connote people being driven away by a hypnotic in influence. Early notions about leadership dealt with it almost in terms of personal abilities. Leaders were credited with supernatural powers such as the ability to see through men’s minds, to tell the future and to compel obedience hypnotically. Leadership is viewed as characteristics of the individual. In recent times, such supernatural explanations have given way to more rational explanations. Current definitions of leadership identify it as a social-influence process. It is said to be ‘the process of influencing group activities towards the accomplishment of goals in a given situation.’

1. Inspires employees: a leader creates a strong urge in employees for higher performance. He lifts a man’s visions to higher sights. By showing the proper way to do a job, a leader helps employees to give their best to the organization. 2. Secures cooperation: A dynamic leader infuses life into the group, he influences the behavior of employees in such way that they readily work for organizational objectives. He makes them realize that by translating plans into action, they can earn adequate rewards. He, thus, inculcates a sense of collectivism in the employees and forces them to work as a team.
