“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.” –Leonardo da Vinci I wanted to write about Leonardo because while being in Florence he has left an impact on me, not only from this class, but from all my classes and some of my weekend trips. Going to the museum filled with his inventions was one of the most entertaining things I have done here in Florence because it was so different than a regular museum. It may not seem as the most important thing, but he invented scissors, something that we look past on a daily basis, but also need quite often leaving a huge impact. Scissors are used in a wide variety of areas including medically and for everyday things such as cutting hair. In the medical field, he was the first to draw and explain how the human body functioned which is still referenced in the field today. There are also medical devices named after him because of all of the research he conducted in the field. Leonardo was so far beyond what was being invented in his lifetime that what he created is still being adapted and slightly upgraded to make some of the greatest machines and everyday items known to man. The military equipment such as a tank or a submarine and even a helicopter have all been adapted by major countries today, over 550 years after Leonardo imagined them. Tanks were not even used until the First World War when they had engines and the ability to build them, becoming a necessity in the major battles. This proves we still have much to learn for Leonardo’s genius hundreds of years later, and I am sure there is much more we can learn from all he created and
