I believe she did, in fact, live by this quote, and her entire life story proves it. She took control of her life, living her way, by her rules. Marilyn stuck up to those who did her wrong, and took pride in those who doubted her. Her career was entirely in the hands of herself, for she was the one responsible for where she was, good and bad. Soon, however, her last name of Mortenson would be changed to Baker, her mother’s maiden name. The reason for this is because Marilyn’s mother, Gladys Pearl Baker, was uncertain who the child’s father was, due to her seeing multiple men around the same time, who could all easily have been candidates. Gladys has several mental health illnesses. She was bipolar, having extreme mood swings, for which she would later be diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic. In fact, these episodes were so bad that she was confined to a hospital for the mentally ill for most of Marilyn’s life. As a result, Marilyn grew up a foster child, living in over twelve different foster homes. She even lived in an orphanage for a little over two years. Although she was the youngest of three children, she did not have a close relationship with her half-siblings, as they were much older than her. Because of all these factors, Marilyn Monroe considered herself an orphan. Unsurprisingly, these experiences made Marilyn want to escape childhood as fast as possible.
