Mechorganistic Organizations Vs. The Tennessee Department Of Human Services

The type of organizational structure that I would prefer is the organic structure. The reason for my preference is that for over 29 years of being in the workforce, I have worked for mostly mechanistic organizations. However, I believe a synergy of the two forms would be better. I would call the new “synergistic” organizational structure “mechorganistic” organization.

Countless establishments are comprised of departmentalized, uneven storage towers of the machine-like administrative structure (Kerfoot, 2016, p. 524). Also, mechanistic organizations operate on a structured business model and seem to offer little room for change. DHS receives a lot of its funding through grant programs and other federal programs. One such program is the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Programs (SNAP), which provides food stamp assistance to families and helps with buying food. Although this is a very good program, the amount of work that one counselor must complete to determine eligibility on behalf of one family or one person is overwhelming. The eligibility counselor must cycle through several screens before reaching the end to determine eligibility. Meanwhile, the client has been there for at least 45 minutes to an hour waiting on the screen to determine if and how much they may be eligible for. He/she also works under the extreme pressure of an overbooked schedule as well as back up their co-workers that may be behind. It is my preference because it is not encumbered by lots of rules and regulations. And, the organic model can adjust to the needs of its clientele when necessary (Kinicki, et al., 2016, p. 253). When I think of an organically structured organization, I see a workplace where everyone is connected to the mission and the vision. From the mission and vision statements, the entire team develops a strategic plan for daily operations. I also believe that weekly meetings should be had to determine what goals are being met. I do believe, however, that a new business start-up could benefit from a combination of the two organizational structures which I call a “mechorganistic” organization. I believe that this “new” type of organizational structure would ensure that in the beginning stages that all goals, policies, and procedures are being met.
