Background:
My name is Melissa Darling and I am currently enrolled at the University of Ottawa in the Honours Bachelor of Commerce program with a specialization in International Management (CO-OP). I will fulfill all requirements for graduation by mid-December 2015. Thus far, my education in International Management has given me an understanding of the particular difficulties that arise in international business and has allowed me to develop strategic decision-making skills to approach these issues. I was first drawn to UVic’s Master of Global Business program by its unique international learning experience combined with a rich cultural awareness unlike any other program in Canada.

The MGB program will allow me to observe firsthand different business practices and provide a platform where I can demonstrate my leadership skills. I am also intrigued by the fact that in contrast to an ordinary exchange program, the MGB program has students travel as a close-knit group for nine months from each path’s partner institutions, thus becoming dependent and closer with each other and the local culture. I was particularly impressed with the variety of courses offered including subjects like international marketing, global strategy, consulting methods and global leadership. Additionally, I look forward to the opportunity of learning about the business context of each region including various industries, legal and economic systems and cultural contours. The program emphasizes leadership, communication, personal reflection and cross-cultural awareness that are key components, which can contribute to my own personal and professional growth. In exploring other graduate business programs, I have yet to find anything comparable to the internationally immersive MGB program at the University of Victoria.
