The Basics of Writing
In Module 01: Essay Elements, I learned valuable information on the essentials in writing, the module contained many topics in regards to writing such as the basic elements needed when writing an essay, commonly used are writing format styles, MLA and APA, avoiding plagiarism and obstacles in writing. The first sections of the module, the basic format structure of a five-paragraph essay, the development and effectiveness of paragraphs, tips to writing the introduction as well as the conclusion, and the thesis statement. The module began with the basic structure of an essay by using an outline of the key components to the five-paragraph essay. Those key components included an introduction, three paragraphs known as the body, and the conclusion.
The next section I found particularly helpful was the development of paragraphs, the module explained a good paragraph contains “completeness, logical order, unity, and coherence.”. A way to captures a reader’s attention with an introduction could be using a question or making an intriguing statement. It gave some helpful tips on writing the conclusion for those writers who struggle; some ideas to approach when tackling the conclusion were writing a restatement of the thesis and the major points, an evaluation of the importance of the subject or a call to arms approach. The module proceeds with a section based on the thesis statement stating the functions of the essay and provides a checklist for what a thesis statement should
