One indispensable quality of a National Honors Society member is character. A person's character is shown in the way they live their life and is the distinguishing aspect of their personality. Good character is defined by the ways in which someone can take criticism willingly and accepts recommendations for improvements graciously, actively helps to eliminate negative influences in the school environment, and has powers of concentration, self discipline, and sustained attention as shown by perseverance and application to studies. I believe I exhibit these qualities. Being able to accept criticism willingly and take recommendations is a salient part of anyone's character. With the types of classes I am taking, I have to be willing to accept help and advice from my peers and teachers, and be able to decipher what type of information is pertinent to what I am doing. Negative influences can affect the moods of the students, in turn causing their attitudes towards friends and teachers to change in unfavorable ways and grades to subsequently drop. Putting an end to these influences, such as drugs and bullying, would help to improve conditions for other students, and therefore it is imperative to rid our milieu of them. As a volunteer at the North Shore Youth Council, we provide a safe and exciting space for students of all ages. On friday nights, we host an open gym for kids, varying in ages between elementary and middle school, where they can come and participate in activities and games with their friends. This allows the children to have access to a bully-free night of fun. Following the open gym, we host an open mic night where high schoolers can enjoy poetry and songs read and performed by their peers. We do this to ensure that the students have a safe, drug free environment that they can benefit
