Mageau managed to open the backseat passenger side door and get onto the pavement, where he was later discovered by three teenagers. The teens called the authorities and when they arrived, Mageau was able to say a few words through his agonizing pain. He said the following about the attack; “a white man… drive up… in a car… got out… walked up to the car, shined flashlight inside...started shooting” (Yancey 15). Ferrin and Mageau were both taken to the hospital, where Ferrin was pronounced dead, but Mageau ultimately survived. During the attack, Hartnell, a psychology major, tried to reason with the man and offered him his wallet, car keys, or any other service he wanted. The attacker did not take Hartnell’s plea. Hartnell struggled to his feet and was able to find someone to call the police. When the authorities arrived, they took the couple to the hospital. Shepard received medical attention but died two days later. Hartnell survived the attack and was able to give a rough description of the attacker to the police, along with a detailed report of the attack.
