Everybody has heard of the fascist dictators who have gained power throughout history; millions of children have learned about the bloody eras of Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini, but do most people really know how they gained and kept their power? While many of these dictators came from different places and had different goals, their strategies to control their countries had many similarities. Through propaganda, secret police, and complete government power, these deadly men gained and maintained power of an entire country, while not needing to worry about the citizens at all. The primary way that many dictators guaranteed support in their rising and ruling was through propaganda. Propaganda was used in many ways to support citizens in their daily life and to slowly incur positive feelings to their leaders, no matter the negative effects it had on their own lives. This means that the government has complete control of the country, from the citizens’ personal lives, religion, and the economy. Stalin fought for this goal with the system of the command economy, a system where the government had complete economic control. Political leaders, largely including himself, made decisions on what they thought would be best for the country, largely prioritizing the wealth of Russia over the lives and conditions of the workers. Hitler also tried to put the Nazi party in charge of decisions regarding the public and what economic areas were focused on in Germany. He put high priority into the weapon industry, rearming the country and creating jobs in factories. He improved the economy and military, at the cost of women losing their own jobs, and caused Germany to become a country to be feared.
