The event I attended for this assignment was baby shower. There are 2 friends from Gambia and Vietnam who are pregnant now. They are expected to give birth on February and March. People who came to this event were very from different countries, such as the U.S, Bangladesh, Equadol, Oman, Nepal, Gahana, and so on. Therefore, it was very diversity group. What we did for the baby shower was that we brought food, played games, and gave presents for babies. 1. How did you feel being in a minority situation? My self-identity did not become salient, but sometimes I can identify I am really Japanese when I can not express my opinion and become shy in class room. Do you think others who are in minority situations feel as you did? I think people who are used to be in a minority situation, feel the similar way as me. On the other hand, people who are not used, felt uncomfortable being in a minority situation. On the other hand, more experiences in minority group people spend, more comoftabble and easier people can feel being in a minority group. Additionally, they talked to me many times, which make me welcomed. People did not make me feel self-conscious. 4. Could you be an effective team member in this group? How would your differences with group members impact on your ability to function in this group? I could be an effective team member, because I am used to being in minority situation and I am good at adopting to be in a different group. Also, I am good at managing time, and organizing what I want people to do to prepare an event. 5. What did you learn about managing diversity from this exercise? I think it is difficult to manage diversity, because people might have completely different ideas or opinions, but if we organize people well and respect each other’s opinion, we are able to manage diversity. Moreover, if we have an ability to manage diversity, we are able to achieve higher goals for an organization. I was not involved in organizing this evert , however, since they have notify the event about 3 weeks ago, and reminded us of the event many times on social media, we were able to bring a lot of own cultural food, even though we did not meet up for a preparing this event.
