My Internship Experience At Ocotillo Elementary School

This internship has been a memorable and meaningful experience that provided me with valuable insights about my instructional and behavioral management abilities. Over the past thirteen weeks, I worked with 22 second grade students in Ms. Maese’s classroom at Ocotillo Elementary School. In this time, I had the opportunity to collect and input data, teach lessons, work with small groups, observe students, and work one-on-one with a select number of students in order to identify effective differentiation strategies. These activities provided me with information regarding my areas of strength and refinement during this internship experience. While my activities were well-received, I was often plagued with worry that my communication was not clear or that my delivery was lacking. Clearly communicating, logically sequencing content, and including all appropriate information are all essential parts of the TAP Rubric (ASU, n.d.). Thus, I understood the impact that these features had on my performance in front of the classroom. I believe that I became so preoccupied with ensuring that I didn't stumble or discuss concepts in a "big picture" way that I fumbled in my delivery at times. However, I believe that I feel much more confident in my instructional practice than I did at the beginning of the internship. I know that it will be a journey for me to feel confident in my abilities as a future educator. I received recommendations for literature, including books by Fred Jones and Kagan strategies, to feel better equipped for my own classroom. The only way for me to build my confidence in teaching is to continue to study and stay informed on educational best practices as well as gather more experience in the front of the classroom. With these two steps, I believe that I will become more comfortable in my own abilities so that I can better serve my future
