My Leadership Philosophy

In the future, I would like to be the most effective leader I could possibly be. I believe that leadership is a varying spectrum on which people with a high level of responsibility are judged based on their behaviors, attitudes, and effect on others. For me to be an effective leader, I feel that I need to be the type of person that is able to have a professional as well as a personal relationship with my followers. I believe that I will need to be someone that is relatable but also someone who garners respect. I plan to be a democratic leader that encourages participation in decisions and does not closely supervise his employees to the point that they feel I do not trust in their abilities. In other words, a leader is someone who leads their followers by example at all times. I strive to be someone that leads by example and encourages followers to view me as someone they can relate to and learn from in the process. Another concept that I feel plays a large part in my leadership vision is the Expectancy Theory. I am a firm believer in this theory which proposes that, “people are motivated when they believe they can accomplish the task, they will get the reward, and the rewards for doing the task are worth the effort” (91). I see in myself at times that I will only put maximum effort into a task when I feel that I have the ability to complete the task, and that I will get some type of reward out of it, whether it be tangible or intangible. In my opinion, it is a leader’s job to create that reward for each follower whether that be in the form of performance incentives, or performance appraisals. There may be followers that only want their work to be acknowledged as something that made a difference and as an effective leader, I want to give that
