My core beliefs and values, along with the knowledge I have received through the business courses, have guided me through shaping my leadership philosophy, which is to lead by example. I will apply my philosophy with my actions and work ethics. As a leader, I understand that I am part of the team and I am willing and able to complete tasks that are given to me. A leader who lacks the initiative and discipline will not motivate their followers to complete their work and risk losing the respect of their colleagues. Respect, in my opinion, is a major factor in being a good leader and is another part of my philosophy. To gain the respect of my colleagues means that I have proven to them that I am trustworthy. Through being a follower, I was able to assess the type of qualities I wanted to possess while leading. I witnessed the importance of having your team trust you and having them comfortable with being open to sharing their own ideas. I quickly learned that it is hard to respect a leader who does not take the teams ideas or opinions into consideration and who only delegates what he or she wants done. While leading, I learned what type of follower I wanted to be to better help the team leader in accomplishing the assignment. I experienced firsthand the importance of being reliable to both your teammates and to your leader, as well, to accomplish our goals. Throughout the courses I learned the difference between leaders and leadership. Leaders are influential. They are the decision makers and the ones who push their team to success. A good leader is someone who has good moral ethics. They strive to succeed but not at the expense of others. They are equipped to handle situations that deal with ethical dilemmas. Their decisions can have a direct impact on the business. For example, if they choose to dispose of unused material rather than recycle them back into the company, they risk being outed by environmentalist for not being sympathetic to the environment.
