My first 87 hours of my practicum have been magnificent. I witnessed school leaders promote a positive school environment and use PLC meetings to focus on improving learning through developing a more rigorous and student-centered curriculum. The focus of my practicum thus far has been a focus on being a leader of learning for students as well as other teachers in my department and providing a safe and secure campus for students.
One major event which has allowed me to establish an emphasis on leading learning has been taking over a department meeting for the science department. I shared tier-one teaching strategies with my department and showed better ways to incorporate formative assessments in the classroom. Tier-one teaching begins with learning the target objectives, pre-assessing, and then creating lessons and activities which cater to all students learning styles. I portrayed this information to my colleagues and then show them better ways to incorporate formative assessments in the classroom. Furthermore, safety should be a top priority for all school leaders. I monitored the hallways during passing periods and in the morning to help promote a safe atmosphere for all students. Monitoring students also has it challenges. Students need frequent reminders of rules and constant redirection to maintain a safe environment. During a high school visit I communicated my behavior expectations to students to help promote a positive atmosphere. During the trip I monitored the students to make sure my expectations were carried out. Making sure all students are given expectations is a top priority for educators.
