McLaughlin (2015) defined core values as fundamental beliefs or guiding principles that influence behavior. Therefore, every effective school leader should establish a set of core values to use as their blueprint for guiding their decisions. These core values generally developed from a set of moral belief that one has in life. My professional core values are rooted in who I am as a person. My first core value as a leader is that I believe that all children have the ability to learn, however, the manner, or the rate in which they learn is different. The hardest challenge as a teacher in school was listening to teacher compare students learning ability to other students. As a principal, I believe that students learning style are different, therefore; the method of delivery for instruction should also be different. In order for a school to be successful as the principal, I must establish relationships with everyone that provides a stake in the school success as a whole. This means collaborating with teachers, students, staff, parents, community members, and school board personnel. I believe one component in building good relationship is by listening. By being a good listener in all circumstances, it indicates that I appreciate other people and respect their point of view. Another layer of building good relationships is showing respect to all individuals. The lack of respect individuals have for the education profession is declining in our society. Therefore, as their leader it is my goal to provide them with a level of respect that indicates that I support their success as an educator and an individual.
