Penn is the ideal place for me to grow as a leader and achieve my goals. Wharton is unique in its emphasis on a flexible, hands-on approach to learning, which encourages its students to be creative and flourish as leaders. Through my firsthand experience of helping others, I have already begun to discover the social impact I can have and hope to continue evolving my influence on the world at Wharton. At Wharton, I can begin studying the fundamentals of business from freshman year, and I am eager to start building my communication and teamwork skills with my cohort. I have founded an online community named “Advertise-Me” for artists to advertise their art and commission prices, and after seeing the artists’ increased success, I now know the power of building and encouraging a community. Professor Kevin Werbach’s course “Gamification for Business” caught my eye with its unique approach of applying elements of video game design to improve business productivity. Moderating the Dreamek Gaming tournament server demonstrated to me how players were motivated both by extrinsic rewards (prize money) and intrinsic rewards (winning). Video games are just a modern manifestation of our reward system, and I am thrilled to personally learn from Professor Werbach how to utilize this behavior as a tool to transform businesses, since no Wharton classes are conducted by graduate teaching assistants. I also strongly resonate with Professor Werbach’s emphasis on using class time for interactive activities and discussions, since I would like to know how I can apply my experience running gaming tournaments to real-life
