Fundamentals of Nursing

National Patient Safety Goals are the foundation of the nursing department. Without these goals in place, the patient will not be receiving patient-centered care. As nursing students, it is important to understand these goals, as well as the DMACC program student learning objectives.
EOP SLO Safe Practice

Safe Practice is doing what is best for the patient and their autonomy. Safe practice involves many different aspects, such as the patient’s comfort, pain level, physical health, mental health, psychosocial needs, and that all their possessions are accounted for. When I received my patient for the day, I studied their chart and got familiar with any possible abnormalities that they may have based on their current or past medical history. When looking at the chart, I always made sure to note their allergies if they had any. Once in the room with the patient I would also clarify their allergies by looking at their wristband. Before starting my assessment, I would ask the patient to state their name and date of birth for me. For the second patient identifier, I would refer back to their wristband. This goal is extremely important in order to know if you are with the correct patient. I did meet this goal during my clinical experience. A National Patient Safety goal I will ensure to meet in the future would be medication safety. Although I was unable to pass medication this semester, next semester this goal will become extremely important and useful. In order to pass medication successfully and safely I will follow the 5 rights: right time, right place, right patient, right medication, and right route. There are many health promoting behaviors one can do. This includes eating healthy, physical activity, adequate sleep, hygiene, ADLs, vitamins, and more. Health promotion will not stop one from getting a disease, but it can lower their chances drastically. According to Public Health UGA, “By focusing on prevention, health promotion reduces the cost (both financial and human) that individuals, insurance companies, families, medical facilities and the amount state and the national would spend on medical treatment.” Health promotion is also important for those who have already been diagnosed. These techniques can relieve the severity of the symptoms. For example, for someone who has been diagnosed with a cardiovascular problem, it is important for them to eat a high protein diet and continue to ambulate. According to the 2022-2023 Nursing Student Handbook, “Health promotion enhances positive outcomes for clients and self through health promotion, illness prevention, and management of care.” From my knowledge and research, I do not believe there is any downsides to health
