Negative Effects Of Imperialism

Imperialism had a negative impact because of the differences in society and numerous lasting effects like damaging the cultural system within many countries.

To begin, imperialism had a negative impact because many were treated poorly with increased racism and no freedom or rights to the people. According to the article, “The Interpreter” It explains, “The colonial regime was racist. It promoted opium smoking, which ravaged countless lives in Singapore. Unemployment levels were high and working conditions were terrible. In other words, this quote is showing one of the effects of imperialism, showing things like the racism taking place and the impacts of multiple people's lives leading to unemployment and eventually terrible working conditions.

It is often thought that imperialism had positive effects within the involved countries. Supporters of that view might also argue that the positives had more value than the negatives of imperialism. While that may be true to a certain degree, there is another view to take into account. What this argument fails to consider is that instead of the positive outweighing the negatives, it was the other way around. Many were introduced to slaves and the cultural identity of many countries were damaged. According to the article “Can colonialism have benefits? Look at Singapore” It explains, “Singapore is now a rich country with housing and excellent state schools and happiness.” This view seems convincing at first, but while it explains the positives, it doesn't show the true negatives of imperialism. There were still the negatives completely outweighing the positives in it, for example, worldwide, there were so many religions forced upon owned lands with native beliefs discredited. Cultural identity as a whole was a struggle for the countries taken over and fully supports the long lasting negative effects of imperialism.
