Source 1, Do Fast Food Restaurants Contribute to Obesity?, explains that the closer and more accessible a fast food restaurant is the more appealing it becomes. The source states that consumers with low self-control become increasingly tempted to purchase these foods as it is so easy to do so. The close proximity of fast food restaurants are said to also cut down travel costs thus decreasing fuel expenditure, thus increasing consumer buying power by allowing one to be thriftier with their money. Therefore the residents of areas that are close to fast food restaurants often have higher risks & rates of obesity, over areas that are located further away, thus proving that fast food restaurants can and do influence obesity.
Fast food franchises have been made aware of the impact that they have on the rate of obesity, therefore food policies have been enforced (such as calorie information on restaurant menus & the taxing of sugar-sweetened beverages). Despite these efforts all three sources agree on the ineffectiveness of these policies, as they have had no influence on the consumers’ buying trends.
