Obesity is becoming more prominent over the years in the U.S., so far more than half of the population is considered obese. Although being overweight is common in the United States people have been weight shamed for a long time. Exclusion against overweight people is evident when hiring in the workplace, working out at the gym, and when receiving medical care. Treatment of overweight people when interviewing for a job or simply just working everyday at the office for larger individuals can be more difficult than one would think. A recent experiment conducted by professor Maurice Schweitzer who has a Ph.D. and her student Emma Levine are researching how people react to weight when in the workplace. After analyzing the results they have came to a conclusion that, “People judge obese people to be less competent even when it’s not the case” (Lebowitz). They do not feel comfortable when working out at a gym that is filled with thin and fit people. It has been reported that “Those who felt they were excluded were 60 percent more likely to be inactive, and 30 percent less likely to exercise at least once a week, when compared to those who do not share the same feelings” (Miller). This study means that they are working out less than the usual recommended amount of time which is 30 minutes a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As Francis Wisniewski said that “‘Gyms are made for fit people to stay fit, not for fat people to get fit’”(Shah). There are many that express an interest in opening a gym that can encourage and help heavier people lose weight. The idea is that there will be “specially trained staff” that can help modify different exercise moves so that they will not injure themselves.
