Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession: Standard 1
1. I demonstrated respect for students’ diverse cultures, languages, skills and experiences.
a. During my time in student observation for EDT 110 Lab, I demonstrated respect for students’ diverse cultures, languages, skills, and experiences. My field observation placed me at Valerie Elementary, a school very different from ones I had previously attended myself. However, I was up for the challenge. Due to the vast array of diversities and cultures in the classroom, I had to maintain an open mind and heart to all students in the 2nd grade classroom. A specific example would be during Black History Month when, though I had little knowledge of many of the subjects being talked about, I acutely listened to each student tell me about their project on their African American role model for the month. Because I did not know a lot of the people they were talking about, each student opened my eyes to a new culture. Each student possessed a unique combination of skills and experiences, which I used to my benefit when helping them with homework one on one.

As a teacher, it is important that flexibility be a strong suit. On the very first day of observation, me and my fellow classmate signed into the front office and were assigned our cooperating teacher. She was not present that day, nor was her classroom available for observation. Therefore, we were placed in three different classrooms throughout the day including a 1st grade classroom, a reading intervention room, and the music room. Rather than freaking out and being upset that I would not get to see my cooperating class for a whole week, I took this opportunity to not only learn more about my field, but experience different learning environments in an effort to perhaps ween out what I would and would not want to
