Outline any two theories of child development and discuss how they contribute to our understanding of the developing child. By: Hazel Callaghan The theory I will be discussing in my essay is the Theory of Cognitive Development, this theory explains the interactions between children and their social environment. The two theorists who have looked at this theory are Jean Piaget (1896-1980) and Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934). Vygotsky’s theory is called the “Social Development Theory” this theory focuses on the cognitive and social development of children, where as Piaget’s “Theory of Cognitive Development” focuses on the child’s interaction with their own abilities and their environment.
