As I walk down the halls of Barton Chapel Elementary, I am very impressed. The school has adapted a PBIS program, and the school is all on board a STARS Goal implementation program as well. “PBIS is, one of the foremost advances in schoolwide discipline is the emphasis on schoolwide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Positive behavior support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.” (Positive …show more content…

It’s an incentive for teachers and students to have their name posted on the board for everyone to see if they continue to have perfect attendance. There is also a community involvement bulletin board. The school at only 25% parental involvement right now. The school has a STAR goal to increase parental involvement to 75% by the end of the year. To accomplish this goal, the principal has vowed to have a parent night at least once a month all year. In the lunchroom, the staff has set a STAR goal that 65% of the student’s nutrition education components will demonstrate increased knowledge of healthy eating habits by the end of the ear. The first one I talked to was an academic specialist. The specialist collected and analyzed all testing data for the school. She also came up with projected goals for improving the school’s performance using the assessment data. There were also instructional coaches at the school. The coaches held pedagogy professional learnings for all subjects taught at the school. The church next door employs an instruction and curriculum specialist. She is a highly-qualified teacher who is an expert on curriculum, and tools used in the classroom. She is also a master at getting resources for any teachers in the county. I am sure this school is maintaining good progress due to all the extra help that is available to the teachers and
