1. Introduction. My personal leadership philosophy is based on qualities I have observed throughout my career exhibited by the leaders who earned my utmost respect. They have been the most effective leaders at creating a positive command climate. The factors I believe that tie into their success are that they are compassionate, approachable, and professional. The number one job of anyone in a position of authority is to take care of their subordinates. In order to do so, the need to be caring and respectful towards those people. He set the tone for the assistance and kindness shown to me by the rest of the crew and it left a lasting impression on my views towards taking care of people. His compassion and approachability are what I strive to achieve as a leader, so that one day I can pay forward the help I was given in my time of need.

b. Later on in my career, as a Third Class Petty Officer coming out of A-School, I reported to CG Station San Diego and began working on my coxswain qualification. The Officer in
Charge (OIC) of the station was an E-7 at the time and immediately came off as incredibly knowledgeable and someone who was committed to his position. In concert with his Executive
Petty Officer, he retained an air of distinct authority and professionalism, which being new to the unit I found intimidating at first. A compassionate leader cares and respects their members. They listen to them and work to mentor and push their individual growth. An approachable leader excels at communicating, at creating a positive atmosphere where members aren’t worried about bringing their problems to bear. A professional leader knows their job, performs it well, and serves as an outstanding example of a Coastguardsman, both in actions and outward appearance. The single most valuable asset in the CG is its people. They keep the CG moving forward, sacrificing time with friends and family to carry out our important missions and ensure the watch is always stood.
They are selected for their willingness, courage, adaptability, and dedication to protect, serve, and defend the people of the United States. They are why my personal leadership philosophy revolves around the treatment of people. Leading others effectively will ultimately lead to generating performance and change in the service, and it all begins with leading yourself. I believe that adherence to these three cornerstones of leadership is the first step towards leading the CG into a successful and proud future.
