Regarding strengths, I realized that I have the ability to communicate personal feelings through writing. As I move into the future, I intend to fine-tune these competences. I however noted that I have challenges in relation to run-on sentences; I tend to write long sentences that are difficult to understand. By seeking the instructor’s guidance and consulting relevant sources, I plan to methodically eradicate this writing weakness. The English 1010 course has thus enabled me to identify personal writing strengths and weaknesses that I plan to address as time goes
Back to Claremont He turned to me, questioning whether I want to raise it or not. The only reply he received-frankly the only reply he would ever need-was my bid number slightly raised in the air and my head slightly nodding in approval. “Two now two now two now two,” an unruly cry tore through his lips, shaking the entire crowd. My actions were kept repetitive and my eye never left the opposing bidder, a collector from out of town.
While reviewing my first memo the three main issues that I saw was the unnecessary use of verbiage, ineffective use of transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and remembering to completely flesh out each test in the rule proof. The most helpful thing I can do in to help myself is just to reread my paper multiple times and even maybe have my peers to look at my paper with fresh eyes. Being concise and to the point is clearly my biggest problem. I have started to edit my paper down multiple times on different days to cut down my extremely long and over complicated sentences. I also think that if I go sentence by sentence then it will be easier for me to cut down on the words that are not needed for the sentence to make sense.
This semester was filled with many bumpy roads. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with my writings , as I didn 't feel confident enough to write a well developed writing. I seemed to find myself struggling whereas writing was not my favorable subject. The major errors I had in my writings this semester would be , grammatical errors, work citations, transition words, formatting ,paragraph development, sentence structure , and sentence level issue. Therefore I have set goals to improve my writing in the future.
My Writing Progression “It’s what we think we know that keeps us from learning” This quote from Claude Bernard describes my writing development this year. At the beginning of this schoolyear, I thought that I was going to go into this year and be able to breeze through this class because I could write a good essay last year and analyze stories, but I was wrong. Lit Comp Honors has been a brand-new experience for me.
When it comes to writing a paper, letter, thank you card, etc., it is difficult for me. The reasons why writing is hard for me is because, a lot of times when I write I get distracted by, other people, thinking about something else on my mind, instead of what I am writing, finishing up my chores, etc. Also, when I write my grammar is incorrect, for example, pronoun errors. In other words, “Everybody don’t care if they hate it or not.” That was wrong, but the correct way to write it is, “Everybody don’t care if he or she hates it or not.”
In my writing at first I with many part of sentence structure and grammar. Trying to not mess up in structure I was unable convey my ideas. Over the course of the semester it has became easier by every essay. My improvement was some not severely, but learning the basic again will help me for all class and other English courses. Writing again was something I slowly was becoming accustomed again as before.
Therefore, when I finish writing a paragraph I must stop and reread it to confirm that my writing contains the facts that I want to share. Also, it must sound cohesive and convey the important points regarding the topic discussed in my writing before I move on to the next paragraph. However, if the paragraph doesn’t flow smoothly, I address those issues immediately before I proceed with the rest of my writing. I always make sure I edit a paragraph before I move on to the next. This has helped me reduce many senseless errors that I often overlook when I proofread the entire document.
My history as a writer has been a bit of a struggle of slow development. From a young age I had a hard time with spelling and this is still a trouble area for me, even with the help of autocorrect. As I grew in age and as a writer my problematic area became not including enough nitty gritty details. My bad experiences that I recall would always involve the start of writing because I struggle with beginning paragraphs. Also, I tend to use the ending paragraph to just repeat myself, so overall my first and last paragraphs are usually shit.
WRITTEN SELF-CRITIQUE Having an Engineering background I struggled more than other students throughout the first part of the Business communication course. However, while practicing with Writing experience in the Cengage learning program I improved my written communication skills and each mistake taught me a unique lesson. During the semester I learned several skills, such as APA style, and the basic structure of a business report or a proposal. Going back through my essays and reviewing the MindTap editorial reports I found a couple of patterns of errors including punctuation, grammatical errors, and spelling.
I make an effort to text as if I were writing. We definitely need punctuation when we write, but I never realized how significant it is in writing. The same order of words can differ in meaning when you add punctuation, this is something I never thought of before. When I heard her give an example of a sentence being corrected by men and how different the meaning of the sentence was when it was corrected by women was quite shocking for me. I absolutely think I am guilty of overusing commas, this interview makes one think of how many grammatical errors will be present in any paper written from now
My preliminary paper, and paper one, had many common-sense mistakes. Pinpointing these mistakes and correcting them would help me achieve a higher grade. After doing research in Jane E. Aarons, The Little, Brown Compact Handbook, I could distinguish what to do and what not to do while writing. My hopes are to continue to correct my mistakes until I have perfected my writing skills.
There I am sitting on my couch with a laptop on my lap. I have a paper due tomorrow and I have no idea what to write about. I put my fingers to the keyboard keys and start to type out the first sentence. “Once upon a time,” I said out loud making sure it sounds right. “There was a boy...,” but I stop short of finishing the first sentence.
Skills such as proper grammar and MLA format still need some adjustment. Even though I have things to improve, I was still able to improve some areas of my writing skills regardless even if it was a small improvement. In the beginning, like
As I began the journey of returning to school, one of my biggest fears, was the writing aspect in the classes. The fear of reading and writing has never been a strong quality; however, I have never able to successfully be creative in the way I learn. I understand my weaknesses and when I need to focus on my strengths. I am constantly learning new ways, skills, and tools to utilize to continue to grow as a writer. Focusing on my strengths allows me to have the security that I can be a good writer.
