Growing up I have gained confidence and a delight in caring for others. This has come naturally to me as I am growing up surrounded by influential health care professionals, many of whom are nurses. Watching them in action and seeing the pride they gained through helping others and overcoming new challenges sparked my interest in pursuing nursing from a young age. My current course has broadened my knowledge by teaching me key factors that must be looked at in order to treat and provide care for people efficiently including myself, factors which include priorities of patients, different medical/surgical conditions, risks involved, precautions to take and understanding of the legislations and policies specific to a nurse's role. First-hand work experience allowed me to build on my knowledge and skills of the healthcare setting. I found it inspiring and important for me to view how individuals take on responsibilities, working independently and how they function when coming together as a team. I took the opportunity to work alongside nurses, observing, asking questions, and getting hands on experiences, assisting anytime when needed in short tasks such as; pregnancy tests, urinalysis, swabbing, taking blood pressure and temperature. I also had the opportunity to see surgical procedures. As a result of my hard work and enthusiasm at the hospital, I was offered a job as a Bank - Health Care Assistant (HCA). I am now currently still in practice, getting experience and improving skills learnt. Working as a HCA has offered me a lot of exposure to a hospital setting. It has taught me to be organised with my time. I have gained confidence in dealing with patient's admissions and paperwork. I have also learnt how to work under pressure.
