My desire to make a positive contribution within a community has influenced my decision to apply to Pharmacy. As I gained work experience, I realised that in addition to the commitment for my A-Level subjects, self-motivation is equally as important for a career within a healthcare environment.
I have enjoyed studying chirality in chemistry this year and learning how two different enantiomers in a racemic mixture can produce different biological responses. One example of this was Naproxen where I studied how one enantiomer can be used to treat arthritis pain while the other is a liver toxin. I also completed an essay on the new research surrounding MRSA which challenged me to expand my knowledge beyond the curriculum and made me aware of the ongoing learning I will need to do beyond my degree.

My work experience at Jade Pharmacy and at Gudka’s Chemist further informed me of the essential role that collaboration plays in the healthcare community in order to provide the best service to each patient. Observing the interactions between GP surgeries and pharmacies gave me the opportunity to expand my own interpersonal skills whilst serving customers. Through these experiences, I discovered the challenges which pharmacists face in their daily job including working methodically and accurately whilst under many time constraints. I started to develop my prioritisation and time management skills when having to complete dosette boxes, dispense prescriptions and help patients at the counter.
