importantly, I have come to see that acceptance of “what is” in the moment that cannot be changed can bring peace. I also currently work at a children’s center as a classroom counselor, helping students (from preschool and up to high school) transition back to public school. The biggest lesson I received from working in this environment is that to not let preconceived notions and biases affect the actions I express. This is because the way we react to situations implicitly creates the situations we expect to see, demonstrating the self-fulling prophesy concept. The problem that can arise from not being aware of the self-fulfilling prophecy is that we start placing blame on others. Working with children, I have come to learn honest reactions for numerous situations and motivations for various human behaviors, since most children have not yet learned to hide their emotions and motivations. I find the honest and true reactions to be very intriguing, thus I want to continue gaining experience through this program. Eventually, I want to work as a school counselor, helping children who have challenging time in the school system. I believe as a counselor I will meet all types of individuals with vast amount of issues who are seeking healing. As a school counselor I know what a client tells me is confidential with few exceptions. I also understand the relationship with the client is strictly professional, meaning the relationship does not continue beyond the work space. Nevertheless, I believe as a school counselor one has to genuinely and sincerely be present in every moment for all children. I have come to learn most children have a keen sense in knowledge whether one is being sincere or not and their reaction expresses this knowledge of this to the counselor or other individuals. I have worked in jobs similar to a school counselor role and seeing people thrive in become more proud of their selves motivates me to attain a Master’s degree, so that I am able to create positive experiences and opportunities for others and myself. With this degree, I want to work in various schools, as well as with different organizations that help individuals in their time of need.
