My philosophy as an administrator comes from a new perspective of this position. I have come to believe that the three-main objectives are to promote a positive work and learning environment, provide support for faculty success, and hiring a collection of the most talented faculty members as possible.
To accomplish these objectives, I would employ many strategies along the way. First, to promote a positive work and learning environment for both faculty and students I would create an environment where faculty members feel that they have a hand in shaping the overall direction of the music department. This would be done by allowing faculty members to meet with me individually to express any concerns they may have. Also, showing gratitude to each member for their hard work and celebrating their achievements. I believe this can be done by assessing what resources we currently have and evaluate how effective these resources are and then finding ways to improve them. If some of our resources are no longer adequate, then we must improve them. This may require a financial obligation that at times can be complicated, but we must commit to finding ways in investing in our teachers and in turn our students. In addition, it’s important that our faculty continues to have access to research grants and other financial rewards so that they can be supported in their own research which will benefit the university as a hold. Finally, similarly to promoting a positive work environment, the faculty must be heard. Our faculty is on the front lines everyday with our students, so it is imperative that as an administrative we are in active conversations with them about how we can be more effective in what we
