I see Medicine as an extremely unique science course balancing both continuous learning and research but still making an impact on the lives of individuals. To me it encompasses an improvement in the quality of life for a variety of people, the diversity of a new daily challenge and the opportunity for personal development. Undertaking work experience in a pharmacy and observing the clinics available showed me that I wanted to work in a field with that same level of patient contact as well as have the ability to conduct further research. My various experiences in the healthcare sector have pointed me towards Medicine as the career best suited to my personality.
I arranged a work experience placement in a hospital pathology department which demonstrated the innovations in science and how fundamental each aspect of Medicine, ranging from communicating with people to using scientific ideas and techniques, is to healthcare. I observed not only the initiative and integrity involved when communicating with people, but the daily pressured environment that doctors face and still manage to achieve a universally beneficial outcome in.
In addition to this, I organised work experience in a hospital plastic department. It surprised me to see the daily morning handover meeting, which demonstrated that whilst you are required to make informed decisions in this career, there is always the support of the department, from the consultant to the first year graduate. Similarly, seeing how the doctors supported patients by offering possible advantageous solutions, as well as explaining the risks and alternatives, illustrated the focus on the best care for each individual
