I always wanted to contribute to my community and somehow change the world. Since I was high school, I always liked to be involved with leadership activities and the student government. I also liked to be informed about the current social and political situation. Yet, it was until I reached the United States that I decided in which way I wanted to become the leader and agent of change that I dreamed about. I decided that I wanted to major in Public Affairs to contribute and serve the communities that are most in need. Back in Miami, I was majoring in Political Science because I had the idea that if I went into politics I was going to be able to create policy and contribute for a better society. However, in my first advising meeting with my advisor a the time, Ms. Potter, made me understand that I was looking for a more practical major rather a theoretical. She introduced me public affairs and I really liked because the major provided me the opportunity to get experience in my specific concentration and develop more organizational and leadership skills. Later on in my academic experience, I focused my interests in public policy because somehow it is most related with policy making and advocacy which are my main interests. Yet, public policy is not my only interest. I also find quite interesting rural or urban development and immigration to its full extent (undocumented immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers). I consider that every day, I am improving my writing, analytical and critical thinking, my vocabulary and time management. Since English is not my first language, communicating effectively has been a challenge that I am trying to overcome every day. Yet, I try my best every time. Also, there are some skills that I feel confident with. I am a active listener and a hardworking individual, I posses problem solving abilities, proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese and French, and I have work ethic. I believe that all these set of skills are based on my personal values such as responsibility, commitment, hard work, respect, determination, fairness, growth, fun, happiness and love. These are my core values and thus these ones are reflected in every single task or assignment that I work on. Moreover, these values have helped me to be a more motivated individual in the way that I can flourish in every single setting that I found a challenge on.
