Personal Statement: Becoming An Effective Leader

When I was five years old I made the groundbreaking decision that, when I grew up, I was going to be a princess. By the time I turned seven, I had become somewhat aware of the fact that “princess” wasn’t the greatest job title. So after about a month of grieving for my lost dream of castles and poofy dresses, I began exploring other options. Unfortunately for me, nothing else from astronaut to president seemed to fit to well. And it wasn’t until I reached the wise age of twelve that I finally thought to myself, why not be a leader? Four years later, I finally believe that I can say that I have made my twelve year old self proud. Every year, I have challenged myself with a rigorous schedule that has expanded both my educational horizons as well as my leadership skills, as I have formed and directed many study groups in order to help myself and my peers prevail over the heavy workload or difficult subject matter. I adore a challenge in the classroom and I try to lead my peers by expressing the passion and excitement that I have for the acquisition of knowledge. In addition, I have distinguished myself as a leader in my extracurriculars, particularly speech and debate. I spent much of this season training new members of the team as well as challenging myself in competition. As a competitor in the category of “Program of Oral Interpretation,” I placed fourth out of seventy-nine competitors at the state level, being the first Southview state finalist in that category in over a decade. I have also earned the incredible privilege of competing at the national level later this year as well as the position of Speech Team Captain for next year’s season. My motivation and passion for what I do has truly characterized me as a leader, constantly pushing myself and my peers to be the best that we can
