There are countless times I was told that nursing is about cleaning up excrement, blood, and vomit. This preconceived notion has scared a lot of people away from nursing. However, this did not deter me from wanting to be a nurse. I was born and raised in Vietnam, where poverty is apparent. Growing up in a society where healthcare is limited has pushed me to really want to help for the people in need. I guess my main source of inspiration to become a nurse simply comes from my innate desire to help and care for people. In addition, the functions of the human body and the effects of the environment, genetics, and drugs on human body have always grabbed my interest. Other than my desire to care for people, the person who has influenced me the most is no one other than my sister. As a nursing student, she has told me numerous stories from her clinical experiences. Her stories were inspiring and made me aware that nursing is an exciting and rewarding profession. She is the reason why I firmly believe in my decision to become a nurse. She told me that the feeling of helping a person is very gratifying. Furthermore, she was given the opportunity to meet people and learn something new every day. She also told me that the job opportunities are endless as there are many things she could do varying from surgical nurse to labor and delivery nurse to intensive care unit nurse. Each job requires specialized skill. Other than caring for patients who are sick or injured, nurses also offer emotional support to patients and their families, taking care of paperwork, and helping doctors diagnose patients. It is essential for a nurse to open, strong, determined, and thoughtful to make caring for the patient easier. I chose Georgia Baptist College of Nursing because I have read that Mercer has the mission to excel in “teaching, scholarship, leadership, practice, research, and service.” As a private school ranked in the top 100 nursing programs across the country, I know I will be receiving the
