Bill Gates, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, and Susan B. Anthony all titans of change that through a combination of their wealth, hard work, and leadership changed the world for the better. I can think of no greater personal manifesto than to leave behind a better world than the one we found. So that is my goal to address the world’s problems using my intelligence, hard work, and leadership. Sadly, we live in a world with many issues for me to address.
To solve these problems, I need to be able to have the ability to influence the world and its people. However, I cannot affect the world until I understand the world and how to guide the world through public policy. Since I subscribe to the ideals of John Locke for a government that does right by those governed and works towards their betterment; I believe that public policy should and can improve the lives of others. If I am to achieve my goal of a better world, then I will need an education and the relationships to do so. The Political Economy major directly fits my needs and offers me the opportunities to pursue my goals and interests. Furthermore, the ability to interact with students pursuing two different fields would provide me the capacity to make connections on both sides of the coin: government as well as business. These relationships would proffer me more opportunities to expand my understanding of issues and scenarios by studying within a community of highly motivated, diverse individuals. Thus, the degrees and students at Georgetown offer me a multitude of ways to expand my knowledge of the world and gain insight into how it functions. These attributes of Georgetown would assist in my development so that I could pursue my goals of bettering the lives of those around
