I completed the task of organizing an entire spring break trip in Colorado, for our club to build homes for families in need. I was blown away from the help and support that our Lakeland community had given me during each phase of this trip. That support was also exemplified while planning events and activities for the other on-campus organizations I was involved with -- Spanish Club, Badminton Club, Hospitality Club, and the National Spanish Honors Society. Planning these events helped instill the sense of community among the campus.
The Hispanic Student Association, or HSA for short, was founded in 1999 by Nestor "Ito" Rodriguez the former president of HSA. Who is now currently the head of the Hispanic alumni council and married to Jaclyn Rodriguez. The organization is located on the main campus in the university center (UC) through the involvement zone in room 221. The purpose of HSA is to spread and demonstrate to other students the marvels of the Hispanic culture and to enrich their minds of the cultural diversity that is around them. To accomplish this HSA does many social events and gatherings, such as the St. Jude walk/run and Hispanic heritage month, which allows students of any background to come and enjoy the Hispanic culture in a safe and discrimination free
It is a way to create positive change and make a difference in the lives of others. I take great pride in serving my community and have found several ways to do so through my involvement in dance classes, babysitting, and serving as a Junior Counselor at camp. As an assistant in dance classes, I help to bring the joy of dance to children in my community, while also providing a positive and welcoming space for them to learn and grow. Through babysitting, I have had the opportunity to support families in my town, providing them with a reliable and trustworthy caregiver for their children. My role as a Junior Counselor at camp has allowed me to give back to my community by providing a safe and fun environment for children to learn new skills, make new friends, and create lifelong memories.

As a Freshman, I won the position of Treasurer- the first office I held in high school. The role educated me on the realities of being in leadership: mistakes are bound to happen, people will not always like the decisions made, and cooperating with a team requires effort from everyone. I saw the transition from being a member to an officer up close, and it is something I’d never take back. During 11th grade, I was elected Vice President of my FFA Chapter and FFA Section all the while becoming Vice President for Key Club too. Through Key Club, I had the opportunity to volunteer at local events throughout the valley including Relay-For-Life, Bowl-A-Thon, the Candy Cane Lane Parade, Food Link, March of Dimes, the Visalia Triathlon, and various elementary carnivals.
During my sophomore year, we began to form the student needs closet, which allows students in need to get any hygiene or school supplies they are lacking. My favorite action of service I have taken was the 2017 Summer Service Trip. I attended this through the school, and really made a difference. We painted offices, locker rooms, and benches. We moved furniture in classes and innovated new spaces throughout our school. I was extremely proud of the difference I made and plan to attend again.
I’m offering my leadership abilities, my vision in helping Latino Americans and minorities alike, and my passion for la comunidad Latina both cultural and traditional. I believe that Latinos have what it takes to succeed, and I believe that Latinos could make a positive name for themselves. I want to be able to inspire people as an Ecuadorian and Colombian. I believe we all have a unique perspective on life, based on our experiences and point of view. I believe my point of view on issues regarding the Latino community will help bring new ideas and future plans for La Unidad Latina.
Introduction In 1968, the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) was founded to address the absence of services for the emerging Latino community. LAYC offered educational and vocational activities after school and in the summer at several locations in the community. With overwhelming support from community youth, volunteers and parents, the LAYC began a multicultural youth and family development center in the District of Columbia serving Latino youth, while serving as a bridge to the wider youth community (“Latin American Youth Center”, 2017). Today, we work with over 4,000 youth and families in Washington, DC, and Maryland’s Prince George’s Counties at four sites and dozens of service points through partner schools and organizations.
The Dance Education Laboratory interests me because we have nothing like it here in Texas. I Recently I got to attend NDEO’s convention that was in Texas, and on my first day I felt like I was at Disney world. As silly as it sounds, I was so excited to shop around and learn from other dance educators. I left feeling so full and inspired, and I realized that my hope and dream for dance education in Texas was to be like what I experienced at NDEO. I want dance education in Texas public schools to be as holistic and comprehensive.
I am an open, energetic, and hardworking individual. I believe I will be a successful member of FTKrew and can help contribute to Dance Marathon overall. As a current Child Life volunteer I am able to look beyond a child’s illness or disability and communicate with children of various ages. I think this will aid me in meeting/serving miracle children and families during the event to allow them to feel comfortable and excited throughout the event. Additionally, I am have strong interpersonal skills and am comfortable working with students of different ages/backgrounds on an individual or team setting.
In the first year, I was a part of a pioneering youth development team in Americorps NCCC Southwest Region. I worked with K-12 students in title one schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, local non-profit organizations, The Red Cross and The Salvation Army. I spent my second year working with underserved youth as a volunteer coordinator for Reading Partners in DC. I learned about the struggles that the students I worked with dealt with every day. I was also able to interact with parents and provide resources for education, housing, food, and nutrition.
