Personal Statement: Portfolio-Based Learning

I plan to get my certification in high school English where my goal will be to teach to students and not to tests such as the Standards of Learning (SOL's) in Virginia. I plan to use a variety of teaching strategies and methods to not only accommodate student’s needs, but also incorporate the curriculum framework of Virginia. My goal is to have students read literature, present on critical analyses and use their writing skills to show me their progress and understanding of the text. While high school English requires more curriculum based learning, I plan to blend both the curriculum and higher level thinking together to challenge students and encourage their plans for the future, hopefully college.
I want to achieve a classroom based on the principles of Felman by not only having students learn from my knowledge, but also for me to learn from theirs. The idea of “absolute knowledge is knowledge that has exhausted its own articulation” is something I plan to emphasize in my classroom (416). I will strive to help students understand that I do not hold all of the answers, I am only there to help them find their own, and in turn their newfound knowledge gives me knowledge as well. Each student will be able to determine the improvement in their writing by reflecting on their past writing assignments. Once students receive their writing assignments back from me graded, I will require them to keep the graded work, but to also rewrite the paper with my comments and concerns in mind. Then, once students have done this with all of their work, they are able to see the progress of their writing and how to criticism from me was beneficial. I want my students to see their own progress because it creates confidence in their writing.
