It never occurred to me that they were even students to begin with. *** “We Grow Writers.” Yes, we do. The We is not a single teacher or a classroom, but of an entire city, a community that goes beyond lectures and workshops, classes and departments. The We goes back to almost 60 years.
Western Washington has a diverse and well trained group of writing centers. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Central Washington University, Highline Community College, Shoreline Community College, Tacoma Community College and University of Washington Bothell . The goal was to find out what the writing centers are using for training, and how the centers operated. The four centers I visited, and the one center I interviewed, were extremely welcoming and have a diverse variety of extensive training programs. Observations of these writing centers enlightened me with an overwhelming amount of information.
The speakers for the first Lecture Series were from the Writing Center located at Texas A&M University. Thaddeus Bowerman is a Writing Consultant and assists students with their writing. Tiffany Tigus is an English Major and gives presentations to classrooms to inform them about what the Writing Center has to offer. The speakers gave a presentation about the Writing Center and how it can help students.
The University of Alabama’s graduate program in Composition and Rhetoric would allow me to reach my goals in becoming an English teacher within the community college system. As a non-traditional student my journey to higher education started at a community college. I quickly noticed that where college students in that system struggled the most was when it came to their skills in writing. The students lacked any direction or foundation on how to write properly and effectively. Because of this deficit in their skill set
As a student, I have grown in my skills for academic success by having to write an essay in my Honors English class. We’ve recently finished reading the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and were told to write an essay about one of the given prompts. Before having to write this essay, I was struggling with the type of vocabulary and perspective, which was third-person, I was supposed to use. I had to find the right quotes from the book and explain in detail how they support the prompt, I felt that was the hardest for me. The words “I” or “me” weren’t allowed in the essay, unless they were in quotes.
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
Every student has their own writing process. Writing process ways is the student's way to have the best writing assignments and make who ever read it understand their main idea. In this essay I am going to explain my own writing process for various type. In chapter 4 by Keith Hjortshoj “How Good Writing Gets Written” which talks about how should develops their writing skills and gives them some tips that they should use in their writing process.
What excites me most about a degree in Modern Languages is to get the opportunity to further develop my knowledge of foreign literature, culture and history. Different languages and cultures have always fascinated me. This is because whilst travelling to different countries I have found that even with a basic vocabulary I was quickly able to integrate myself within a foreign community. Somebody once told me that after 12 months spent in France, you will actually begin to dream in French and I cannot wait to find out if that is true. French has been such a pleasurable language to learn, although it is incredibly structured, I find that the spoken word is romantic and melodious.
Curiosity has always driven me towards new experiences. Early in my high school years i discovered a personal truth. I have no limitations other than those i choose to impose upon myself. I’ve always wanted to go to college, it’s been my dream ever since i was young, not only to obtain a higher education, but also to motivate others to keep moving forward. As i grew older i realized that in order to make my dreams come true i would have to make sacrifices and take risks.
In the writing process, the hardest part for me was to follow the rubric because this is the first comparative essay that I’ve written and it’s hard to follow the expectation from the rubric. If I would do something differently, it would be reading the rubric before I write my essay instead of reading the rubric after I finished with my essay. And for the editing process, the hardest part was to help my friends to become more critical and also helped them with their own writing. For me the editing tool that worked the best is the checklist because it is simple to use and I got a lot of feedback from the checklist paper. I spent more time in the editing process because I got a lot of feedback and those feedbacks helped me with my essay and
I believe nobody is perfect, especially in writing. All writers have their strengths and weaknesses. For me, I am especially good at being different. I am unlike others in the way that I approach topics. I use my unique thought process towards prompts to accomplish that.
This paper addresses the problem(s) confronting the students coming into writing centers bringing with them dissertations and proposals written in highly specialized genres. These words demand a higher level of writing skills that too frequently are not part of a writing center. The author’s findings are supported by separate surveys. The conclusions share the ideas of making the writing centers more efficient and up-to-date to meet the needs of all students across the college population.
Creating and Giving a Speech Ever had trouble writing a speech? I know I have, and I am sure we all do. I always had a hard time writing mine, only because I do not like writing down my thoughts. Writing a speech is not easy, nor giving it afterwards. And creating it is not an easy process if you have no idea what you’re doing.
What does writing mean to me? Writing means getting people engaged in your piece. It means people wanting to keep reading what you wrote. The biggest thing about writing to me is expressing your thoughts and letting your mind go. Using good word choice and having a strong voice in the writing is something that makes it good.
As the advisory ends, this assignment provides an excellent opportunity to look back on my experiences in this class. Throughout this past advisory in the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Course, I have grown not only as a writer but also as an individual. I truly appreciate the growth that I have gone through in this class. It is difficult to put into words how much I have grown but I try to do so throughout this reflection.
