Persuasive Essay On Gmo Foods

881 Words4 Pages

Food is vital, it’s what gives us energy. Hoeve, the foods we eat have not always been the same. The food we eat contains DNA and that DNA has been altered many times, for instance corn. Corn was not the same thousands of years ago. It was once wild grass, but when farmers bred it with different types of crops, we got corn. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. With GMO’s you can change the genes within the DNA of an organism so it can have different traits. Most foods in the US have GMO’s. Now with the advancements, most of our foods contain GMOs, such that 95% of sugar beets, 88% of corn and 94% of soybeans are genetically modified. Before we can physically change the DNA of an organism, farmers have breed different crops together, like corn, to get the traits farmers wanted for the crop. Now that we have better instruments, we can physically change the DNA for a specific trait. How? This can happen by many techniques. One of the ways we change the genes of an organism is by inserting the new gene into a virus. The virus when inserted, will infect the organism, most likely a plant, the virus will infect the organism's cells hence the new trait(s) will transfer. GMOs have been used around 90% of the world. About ⅔ of all food is genetically modified according to “D news”. We have GMOs because we need crops to have specific traits. For …show more content…

One of the reasons is the GMO’s from crops can spread to non-GM crops. This would contaminate crops that are non-GMO. Another reason is the GMO crops can contain harmful genes that are dangerous to organisms that eat it. In the article “Using genetics for food production” it gives us an example that if someone is allergic to banana and they eat a plant containing a gene that has banana genes will cause harmful reactions. My final reason is we have little knowledge of GMOs so there will be unknown results. In addition funding for GMOs goes to tests that show positive
