According to German Lopez, a reporter for vox.com, since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, “there have been more than 1,600 mass shootings, killing more than 1,800 and wounding more than 6,400” (Lopez). Within a 6 year span, there have been almost 2,000 mass shootings with the most recent being at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. With all of these mass shootings, the topic of gun control has been a huge controversy across the United States. Many people want to make a change and want gun laws to become stricter; however, many people think it is an infringement on their 2nd Amendment right. In order to limit gun violence in the United States, the government needs to make background checks more thorough, ban semi-automatic weapons, and raise the age to purchase a gun. To begin, the United States Government needs to make the background check process more thorough. In many recent cases of gun violence, the shooter has been said to have mental health problems. The Constitution says that every American has the right to bear arms; however, it does not specify the arms Americans can bear. The Constitution was ratified in 1789, which was over 200 years ago. At the time, there were single shot muskets that would take around 5 minutes to reload. There were not even machine guns at the time this was made a law. Weaponry has advanced drastically in the last 200 years and the founding fathers did not know what was ahead of them. If people want to use the Constitution as an argument against gun control, they should also note that the Constitution states that people have the right to life. These mass shootings are infringing upon people’s right to live; therefore, it is an infringement of a more important Constitutional right.
