Human trafficking is and has always been a major problem around the world. This industry, as a whole, is internationally run and according to recent statistics, it is worth $150 billion dollars (venturebeat). The human trafficking industry contains many different branches: trafficking in forced labor, trafficking of cells and organs, smuggling, and the sexual exploitation of women and children (interpol). While the sex trafficking and exploitation branch isn’t the largest, it is the most profitable, generating about $99 billion dollars. ). It is basically a yard sale site; however, traffickers are abusing this website to sell their victims. Only the traffickers (and buyers) know what the other traffickers are selling. It is like code for them. Wellington Brown was found guilty of using this site. He was convicted and is now serving 10 and a half in prison, again, not enough time. I believe that sex trafficking should be seen as a higher charged crime and those who act on it deserve more than 10 to 20 years.
There was another recent case in May 2017, where Jamar White, (32) told a 15 year old girl he was going to take pictures of her for an advertisement. She and two of her friends went to his house where they smoked marijuana and drank, then proceeded to pose almost naked for him (daytondailynews). He posted the pictures on Backpage.com, so he could sell the girls into having sex, it was prostitution. In this case, the girls knew what they were getting into, because they were told from the beginning that they would be having sex for money; although, a 15 year old girl does not have the common sense to make that decision. The 15 year old was missing from school on a Monday and when she returned the next day, she was wearing more expensive clothing to show off her new found job. She was trying to recruit other girls into helping White with his business. Someone overheard the conversation and reported it to the police, leading up to White’s arrest. White is still awaiting
