Many people believe that marijuana should be legalized and many believe it should not be legalized. There are good reasons supporting each side of the legalizing marijuana debate. Is it really a good idea to test people’s self control when it comes to marijuana? Marijuana should be legalized because it helps a lot of people who have physical pain or diseases. It helps with epilepsy, pain from AIDS, nausea from chemotherapy, Crohn’s disease, and muscle spasms related to multiple sclerosis. A study of 58 patients using the derivatives of marijuana found they had less arthritis pain and slept better. NYU Langone Medical Center showed a 50% decrease in the frequency of seizures in people in a study of 213 patients. If marijuana becomes legal people won’t have to be violent and illegal to get it, so there will be less crime everywhere and less problems on the streets. The taxing of marijuana can also go towards helping us as a whole country and helping us financially. It would help the states that are close to bankruptcy gain the money they need. In Colorado, Denver, they legalized marijuana and violent crime went down 2.2% in the first 11 months of 2014. Burglaries decreased 9.5% and overall crime decreased by 8.9%. Data released by the state Department of Revenue reveal that tax revenue from retail marijuana sales amounted to $40.9 million between January 2014 and October 2014, not including revenue from medical marijuana and licenses and fees. Another good reason marijuana should be legalized is because it is less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana is shown to be not as harmful as other substances people do on a daily. Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes are both more addictive than marijuana is.
