Marijuana is making unstoppable progress across the United States. In 2012, Colorado became one of the first two states to legalize marijuana cultivation, manufacture and sale for adults 21 and over. The current developments demonstrate the positive impacts of legalization and regulation instead of prohibition. Promising indications like decreasing crime rates and economic revival strongly suggest that things are moving into the right direction, since the new regulations were passed in Colorado. Additionally, 23 states in the United States have approved the use of medical Marijuana due to numerous health benefits and the great potential for the advancement of medicine. First of all, marijuana can be used to treat and prevent the eye disease Glaucoma. According to the National Eye Institute.“Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma." (Walsh and Loria). Moreover, marijuana could help reverse the carcinogenic effects of tobacco and improve lung capacity as a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2012 reports. Furthermore, tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, is contained within marijuana, can help to control epileptic seizures, as a study shown by Robert J. Deloranzo of Virginia Commonwealth University and published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in 2003. Researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007 that Marijuana stops cancer from spreading. Additionally, medical marijuana can reduced anxiety. This would improve the smoker’s mood and act as a sedative in low doses. Harvard Medical School found it out in 2010. Besides these benefits, medical marijuana has many other advantages such as easing painful symptoms of multiple sclerosis, treating diaphragm spasms, lessening side effects from treating hepatitis C and increasing treatment effectiveness.
